Job Description UPMC Jameson is hiring a Supervisor,
Pathologists’ Assistant to join the Lab Services Team! This
full-time role will work Monday through Friday with occasional
travel to other Anatomical Pathology sites in the region as needed.
/n Purpose: Under the general administrative direction of the
Administrative Director, Pathology, supervises all pathologist
assistants and autopsy technician in the performance of procedures
as well as Laboratory Assistants, Lead Technologists and Tissue
Transporters. Is responsible for cost center budget, hiring
discipline, capital requests, etc. Provides exceptional service to
patients a courteous service to clinicians. Serves as the primary
trainer for Resident Pathologists in their training in gross
surgical and autopsy pathology. Responsibilities: /n /n - Develop
tissue handling protocols and procedures for research studies in
conjunction with research investigators. /n - Demonstrate in-depth
knowledge of pathophysiology for case types seen at the UPMCHS.
Direct others in specimen triage, description, orientation and
sectioning. /n - Orient, train, develop and supervise Resident
Pathologists, pathologist Assistants, Autopsy Technicians,
Laboratory Assistants and Tissue Transporters. Prepare
non-physician schedules, job duty assignments and evaluations. /n -
Responsible for Anatomic Pathology Lab Information System software
update, physician training and procedural issues. /n - Perform
inventory, ordering, maintenance and storage of supplies and
equipment in the department. /n - Oversee the operation and
development of the Laboratory Information System as related to
Gross Pathology, Operating Room Consultation and Autopsy Pathology.
/n - Respond to all work situations in a professional manner. /n -
Perform quality assurance monitoring and follow-up gross in
surgical and autopsy pathology. /n - Convey a positive attitude
with courtesy, respect and initiative in all work situations. /n -
Review procedure manuals and develops new procedures and policies.
/n - Develop and documents recommendations for capital and
operating budget and submits to the Administrative Director of
Pathology. /n - Serve as the primary trainer of Resident
Pathologists, Fellows and Medical Students in gross surgical and
autopsy pathology of adolescent, audit and geriatric patients as
well as the Laboratory Information and Medical Archival Systems
(MARS). /n - Communicate with clinicians regarding specimen
procurement, delivery and orientation, including interoperative
specimen orientation. Assume responsibility for the front end of
Pathology Services insuring optimal care is provided. /n -
Supervise the operation of the Surgical Pathology Gross Room,
Frozen Section Rooms, and the Autopsy Suites. /n - Perform employee
performance appraisals. /n - Perform duties according to the Basics
of Service Excellence when interacting with visitors, patients,
hospital personnel, medical staff and coworkers. /n - Act as the
department of Pathology safety and regulatory agent in keeping up
to date with new standards and oversees safety training for
Anatomic Pathology. /n - Monitor operating costs and expenditures,
productivity levels and procedure volumes for his/her cost center,
with monthly variance reports to the Administrative Director of
Pathology. /n - Interview, screen and recommend to the
Administrative Director of Pathology candidates for job vacancies.
/n - Adhere to departmental and hospital policies. /n Graduate of a
NAACLS accredited, Master's degree pathologists' assistant training
program or Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or Medical
Technology or a related field and successful completion of an AAPA
approved program is required. Knowledge of specimens, autopsy
procedures and general methodology normally gained through at least
5 years of experience as a Pathologists Assistant.
Supervisor/management experience of 6 months is preferred.
Knowledge of OSHA safety and chemical regulations is required as
well as laboratory computer services. Analytical and organizational
ability necessary to identify technical resources and provide
effective administrative and personnel management in assigned area.
Interpersonal ability necessary to deal effectively with all levels
of hospital staff and physicians and to supervise assigned
personnel. Oral and written skills sufficient to communicate
effectively both orally and in writing. Computer aptitude necessary
to effectively utilize laboratory computer systems. All procedures
or job related tasks involve inherent potential for mucous membrane
or spills contact with blood, body fluids or tissues. A potential
for spills or splashes of biohazard substances does exist. Exposure
to normal laboratory lights and noises and occasional exposure to
toxic and carcinogenic chemicals. Licensure, Certifications, and
